Whately School Committee reorganizes, takes first look at statewide ICE-response policy. Members re-elected their chair and vice chair and named committee member David secretary, then approved five policies, including on student seclusion and timeout, on a unanimous voice vote. Superintendent Darius presented a first reading of an immigration-enforcement response policy modeled on Massachusetts Association of School Committees guidance tied to a law signed by Gov.
Maura Healey, saying he wants to "go to the MASC policy just to keep it streamlined and easy" rather than keep language borrowed from Frontier Regional School District. The district's business official, Chrissy, reported $156,339.77 in signed warrants and a districtwide electricity overage tied to rate increases, not usage. Whately will receive $58,000 in state rural school aid, up $27,000 from last year.
No vote was taken on the ICE policy.
