Greenfield School Committee Rescinds Literacy Audit, Approves Three New Transport Vans

School Committee · Meeting of July 8, 2026

Greenfield School Committee rescinds literacy audit authorization, citing improved student benchmark data. The committee voted 3-1 with two abstentions at its July 8 meeting to rescind a prior authorization for a district-wide literacy audit after Member Ann Deitman pointed to end-of-year data showing students performing well below benchmark dropping from 41 percent to 29 percent of the measured cohort over the 2025-26 school year. A preceding motion to contract with Keys to Literacy as the audit vendor had already failed 2-3, with Chair Sexton abstaining and stating the audit "didn't really teach us anything that we didn't already know" — a comparison she drew to an earlier paid transportation study.

Incoming Superintendent Carol Kruiser, eight days into the role, called the literacy data "extremely promising" but declined to take a position on the audit. The committee also unanimously authorized the administration to purchase or lease three 10-passenger transit vehicles from the transportation revolving fund, and voted to appoint seven community members — Roxanne Wiedegardner, Amy Amen, Derek Healy, Mike Davis, Isaac Mass, Liz Reno, and Doug Selwyn — to the new Long-Term Facilities Use Advisory Committee.
