Whately Finance Panel OKs Two Reserve Fund Transfers

Other Committee · Meeting of August 31, 2026

Whately Finance Committee weighs a debt exclusion tied to a $237.5 million regional tech school vote. The panel unanimously approved two reserve fund transfers, $1,500 for DEP-mandated landfill test borings and $462 for an animal control kennel fee, leaving just over $18,000 in reserves. Much of the meeting focused on the Franklin County Technical School District's pending ballot question authorizing up to $237.5 million in borrowing, with MSBA covering 66.27 percent; members estimated Whately's annual share at $200,000 to $272,000 over a 30-year bond.

"It's going to take all our capital projects away," one member warned if the town skips its own debt exclusion. Enrollment data showed just 13 Whately students at the tech school as of October 2025, versus 129 from Greenfield. No vote was taken on the debt exclusion question itself.
