Committee keeps drafting Greenfield civics handbook

Other Committee · Meeting of August 31, 2026

Greenfield's Community Relations Committee workshopped a civics handbook meant to demystify city government, after a resident questioned its purpose. Councillors Rent, Fulton, Sylvain Owens and Dillman attended, with Minhouse absent. Resident Pamela Goodwin of 54 High Street told the panel, "What I don't understand is a handbook is sort of a guideline, isn't it?" prompting members to rename the project from "resident handbook" to the "Greenfield Civics Handbook" and add an explanatory preface.

The committee spent most of the meeting restructuring draft sections on the city charter, home rule and the three branches of government, and discussed using the Lexend typeface for accessibility, which chair Sarah described as "easily read by people with like ADHD and dyslexia." Members also agreed to add a tax-fairness note clarifying that renters and undocumented residents pay taxes too. The meeting adjourned near 8 p.m. with no substantive votes taken.
