WHATELY — The Whately Conservation Commission reviewed early housing concepts for the former restaurant site on State Road and weighed holding a conservation restriction on water district land. Consultant Chris Chamberlain of Berkshire Design Group told the board, "This is a feasibility study. None of these are anywhere close to being a real development," presenting options ranging from two single-family lots to a 12-unit apartment building, with floodplain and shallow groundwater limiting realistic schemes to roughly two to six units.
Commissioner Montserrat Archbald, the board's liaison to the Housing Committee, said that body favors two duplexes or two three-unit buildings. Chair Scott Jackson said the dissolving Whately Water District hopes to sell a six-acre parcel, appraised at $10,000 with a $20,000 offer in hand, contingent on a conservation restriction; members gave informal support, calling it "just a vibe check." No votes were taken on either item; minutes were approved unanimously.
