Conservation Commission Approves Route 5 Clearing
Whately's Conservation Commission approved MassDOT's request to clear vegetation along Route 5 near the I-91 bridge.
Conservation · Meeting of August 25, 2026
Whately's Conservation Commission approved MassDOT's request to clear vegetation along Route 5 near the I-91 bridge. The unanimous vote on a negative determination of applicability added a condition limiting clearing to 20 feet from a guardrail in one section, after member Andrew Ostrowski raised concerns about wetland shading on the southbound slope. MassDOT representative Robin cited "wrong way driving incidents on the off ramp and also some collisions near the on ramp" as the safety rationale.
Separately, farm conservation manager Allison Bell asked the commission to formally back an invasive-species outreach effort targeting swallow-wort and knotweed, with member Ann Barker volunteering as the commission's delegate; a formal vote was deferred to the September 16 meeting. Staff also reported an unauthorized beaver dam breach near a State Road solar facility and a new complaint over road millings proposed near Tritown Beach.
