Assessors approve 44 excise abatements, head to closed session

Greenfield assessors say the town missed years of state tax exemption reimbursements, now being corrected. Assessing staff told board members Jeff Green, Jim Geisman and Chair Broussaint that veterans exemption reimbursement submissions rose from $3,000 in 2023 to $90,000 for fiscal 2026, and motor vehicle excise exemption claims grew from $2,000 in 2024 to $22,000 this year, gaps one member said reflected "how many years did incompetence cost us." The board approved 44 motor vehicle excise abatements and separately discussed, without a vote, transferring money from the town's overlay fund pending further research. Staff also described ongoing difficulty reconciling personal property tax accounts against outside vendor RRC's database, with one board member having personally identified active businesses missing from that list.

The board then entered executive session to discuss pending abatement cases.
