Whately Building Committee Recommends $4,300 Campus Survey for Highway Garage Study

Other Committee · Meeting of March 12, 2026

Whately's Municipal Building Committee recommended a $4,300 campus survey and flagged a potentially inflated $336,000 elementary school roof bid at its March 12 meeting. The committee voted unanimously to recommend the Select Board authorize the disbursement from the town's roughly $100,000 building stabilization fund, directing Parallel Eaton and Associates to survey the corridor between the highway garage and the cell tower as a first step toward siting a new or relocated highway garage. On the school roof, a member reported that a shingle replacement quote of just under $336,000 from a single contractor appeared high against an informal industry benchmark of $65,000 to $85,000 per 100 squares, prompting the committee to seek additional estimates through contacts including Stone Route Roofing.

The committee also reviewed a preliminary informal floor plan — described by one member as "not quite sufficient" in its current form — for expanding the police department into an adjacent town hall bay, and agreed to pursue a feasibility study or architectural review before taking any formal action on that project.
