Recreation Commission Told It Will Lose a Full-Time Position

Greenfield Recreation Commission told a budget-season staff cut is final, not negotiable. Staff member Donna reported that a meeting with the mayor, the city's chief financial officer and its HR director produced a firm message: "It's not negotiation. We're losing a position." The department will go forward with three full-time positions after commissioners learned Massachusetts law bars recreation revolving funds from covering full-time staff, unlike the school department.

Grant applications to CDBG and the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts were both denied as "supplanting" municipal funds; a Peabody Foundation application is pending. Earlier in the meeting, fifth grader Liam McDonough and his father, John McDonough, asked the board to preserve the after-school Rec program, which raised $5,615 and drew about 100 golfers at its recent Mini Golf fundraiser.
