Recreation Commission backs $17,600 budget cut, keeps coordinator

Greenfield Recreation Commission trims $17,600 from its budget to save a full-time coordinator job. Commissioners voted unanimously for a $290,945 fiscal 2027 operating budget, proposal 1B, rejecting an option that would have cut the youth center coordinator position entirely for a 17 percent reduction. The nonprofit Friends of Greenfield Recreation pledged $7,500 from its roughly $9,000 fund balance to help offset the shift of seasonal wages into the department's revolving account.

"When you lose positions, it's very hard to get them back," one commissioner said, citing a prior cut that took 15 years to reverse. Commissioners also raised Rec Room afterschool fees from $150 to $250 per season and from $400 to $700 per year to help retain two support staff for the roughly 30 children enrolled.
