Greenfield ZBA Unanimously Approves Fuel Storage Permit for Butternut Street Distributor
GREENFIELD — June 11, 2026 — Greenfield Zoning Board approves 18,000-gallon fuel storage permit for Butternut Street heating oil distributor. The board voted unanimously Thursday to grant a special permit to 33 Butternut LLC for property at 33 Butternut Street, bringing a fuel storage operation that had run without required zoning approval since 2011 into compliance. Applicant Brian Guehler, a prospective buyer of the property, told the board that trucks storing on-road diesel, off-road diesel, home heating oil, and kerosene are garaged at the site, with fuel loaded at a Springfield terminal before going to customers — not transferred on site. The permit caps total fuel storage at 18,000 gallons across all vehicles, limits a separate above-ground skid tank to 500 gallons of on-road diesel, and bars any retail or on-site sales, restricting the business to off-site delivery only. Guehler must next obtain permits and licenses from the Greenfield Fire Department under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 148 before the operation proceeds under the new authorization.
