Greenfield Recreation Commission Unanimously Selects Higgins Family for Fortin Award

Other Committee · Meeting of June 11, 2026

Greenfield Recreation Commission awards Fortin honor to volunteer couple, eyes City Council budget vote. The commission voted unanimously at its June 11 meeting to present the annual Fortin Award to John and Michelle Higgins, longtime volunteers at the department's Mutt and Mayhem dog event and Winter Carnival. Recreation Director Christy reported $15,800 raised to date for the July 6 fireworks event — not including a $12,000 contribution from Isaac at the Garden Cinema and $17,000 held by the Friends of Greenfield Recreation.

The budget fight over a Recreation Room staff position moves to Ways and Means on June 16 and City Council on June 17; commissioner Donna told the committee the revolving fund's statutory 18-hour weekly cap makes the position "impossible" to sustain without a general fund appropriation: "You can't just fund it with revolving — I don't know how much more clearly we can state that." The current staffer holds the position through June 30.
