Greenfield Historical Commission Seeks $5,000 Grant for Stagecoach Restoration

Other Committee · Meeting of April 2, 2026

Greenfield Historical Commission files $5,000 stagecoach restoration grant and debates state demolition-delay legislation. The commission, meeting April 2, learned that a $250,000 federal earmarked grant possibility had collapsed after Michael Nelson concluded the project was too small to be competitive, but one member filed a First Life Sustains 2026 grant application for $5,000 on the day of the meeting against a next-day deadline. A South Dakota restoration firm has quoted $157,000, including two-way transport, for a full disassembly and restoration, with full payment required upfront and a roughly one-year turnaround.

The Community Preservation Committee, one member reported, has forwarded $243,130 in funding recommendations to the City Council, with the Wilson Building facade restoration receiving $60,000 and a Cork Square project associated with developer Geordie Herold the only preservation application denied outright. Members spent substantial time on proposed changes to MGL Chapter 40C that would mandate a uniform statewide 12-to-24-month demolition delay for buildings 50 years or older, while potentially eliminating the stronger outright-denial authority currently held by locally designated historic district commissions — a prospect members called "taking stuff away" from the communities that have built the most robust protections.
