Greenfield EDC unanimously backs Central Commercial zoning fix, debates free fridges

Greenfield's Economic Development Committee voted unanimously to recommend a technical Central Commercial zoning fix and spent over an hour debating a broader free-fridge and farm-stand proposal. The four-to-zero recommendation on amending sections 200-5.3 and 200-6.2 clears a contradiction that could have allowed single-family structures up to 70 feet tall in the Central Commercial District and left minimum fence-setback rules ambiguous; Planning Board had already backed the change unanimously. Councilor Brown's separate draft amendment — aimed at enabling community refrigerators, loosening farm-stand rules to allow flowers and free goods, and permitting front-yard greenhouses — drew cautious support but no vote, with members citing illegal-dumping risks and enforcement questions; it goes to the Planning Board on June 4.

Economic Development staff Amy Kaelin reported the Hope Street RFP is on track for June public meetings and that the First National Bank RFP deadline has been extended to June 26 at 11 a.m. after a developer requested more time — which Kaelin called "especially exciting."
