Planning Board Votes to Allow Barns as Homes
Greenfield Planning Board votes to let barns and garages become homes.
Planning Board · Meeting of October 1, 2026
Greenfield Planning Board votes to let barns and garages become homes. The board unanimously initiated a zoning amendment allowing accessory structures over 900 square feet to be converted into single-family homes by special permit, settling on August 17, 2016 — the date Greenfield first allowed accessory dwelling units — as the cutoff for eligible buildings. Chair Jeff Sauser said of the lengthy date debate, "We got to pick a date somewhere." The board also approved site plans for a Dollar Tree moving into 107 Main Street, requiring 90 percent window visibility and dark-sky lighting, and for a self-storage facility at 78 Woodard Road, requiring new native screening and a black chain-link fence with privacy slats.
Member Sarah Brown-Anson announced her term ends in December and she will not seek reappointment: "I'm not going to renew."
